Maid Services vs Independent Cleaners in Spain: What Actually Changes

Hiring someone to clean your home on the Costa Blanca usually comes down to one decision: an independent cleaner working privately, or a registered maid service with employees, insurance and a documented system. Both options are common in Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa and the surrounding urbanisations, and both can work well — but they carry very different levels of risk, cost transparency and reliability.

This guide explains exactly what changes when you move from an independent cleaner to a professional maid service, what each option really costs once everything is counted, and how to choose the right one for your property.

What is a maid service, and how is it different?

An independent cleaner is a self-employed person (or, in some cases, an unregistered worker) who cleans your home directly for an agreed hourly rate. You deal with one individual: you agree the day, you agree the price, and you rely on that person turning up.

A maid service is a registered company that employs cleaning staff. The company holds the contract with you, not the individual cleaner. That means the company is responsible for staffing, training, insurance, materials, quality control and cover when somebody is ill or on holiday.

The practical difference is not the cleaning itself — a good independent cleaner can clean beautifully. The difference is what happens when something goes wrong, and how consistent the result is over twelve months rather than one visit.
